- 1) Capital of Newfoundland. Founded in 1582 by Sir Humphrey Gilbert. It was captured by Iberville in 1696, and again during the Seven Years' War, but finally reverted to Britain, with the rest of the island, in 1763.Index: Hd Taken by the French, 44. It was a military station during the American invasion; captured by Arnold in 1775; and relieved by Preston with troops from Montreal.
